Nuts are almost always used opposite a mating bolt to fasten a stack of parts together. The two partners are kept together by a combination of their threads' friction, a slight stretch of the bolt, and compression of the parts.

Nuts are most commonly hexagonal in shape. It is important to use the correct sized spanners to avoid, ‘rounding off,’ the nut. Otherwise, if using an adjustable spanner you must ensure it is full tightened over the flat faces. Other specialized shapes exist for certain needs, such as wingnuts for finger adjustment and captive nuts (eg cage nuts) for hard to reach areas.

Nyloc Hex Nuts are designed to offer a sticking type lock caused by the addition of a nylon insert. This helps prevent the nut from lossening through wear and vibration.

Serrated Flange, Hex-Nuts Flange nuts are nuts with an enlarged base that acts as a built in washer. On the underside there are serrations (bumps) that will slightly deform/ indent the fastened material and therefore, ‘lock,’ it in place.

Castle/ Castellated/ Slotted nuts are hexagonal nuts with slots at the top that makes the nut resemble the battlements of a castle. These slots provide a substantial lock when used with a split pin.

A locking/ half/ thin nut is tightened behind another nut as an extra precaution to prevent a fastening from loosening due to vibrations and/ or torque. These nuts are approximately 2/3 the thickness of a full nut.

Wing Nuts have 2 large flanges on opposite sides of the nut. One might say their profile is the same as Ben Ball’s, head shadow. They are fastened with finger adjustment and used in light duty applications where the nut is frequently removed or for hard to reach areas.

Dome/ Acorn/ Cap Nuts have a rounded end to make the fastener a feature or help with safety.

UNITS OF MEASUREMENT FOR THREAD TYPES

Metric Coarse and Metric Fine are in Millimetre (mm) units and were developed to simplify the imperial systems. Coarse is standard and fine is either 0.75 P, 1 P, 1.25 P, 1.5 P, depending on the shank diameter. Europe moved to this system but the Americans choose Imperial as their default. A coarse thread has less helical coils per mm and a fine one has more. Coarse is used for heavier loads and fine is used for lighter loads prone to vibrations.
